9 Then Saul, still breathing threats and murder against the disciples of the Lord, went to the high priest 2 and asked letters from him to the synagogues of Damascus, so that if he found any who were of the Way, whether men or women, he might bring them bound to Jerusalem. (Acts 9:1-2)
In the beginning, those who followed Christ were said to be “of the Way”. There was no language that called them “the church” or any building specially dedicated for those who followed Christ. Nor is there any commandment from the Lord to build buildings dedicated to Him that we should meet at. In fact the Lord said:
For where two or three are gathered together in My name, I am there in the midst of them.”
(Matthew 18:20)
We can meet any where to talk about the Lord or fellowship. Even online if necessary. There are indeed many who would scoff at this notion. They would want to know who would have authority over the meeting. In fact only Christ should have authority over the meeting. You might say, “But we can’t see or hear Christ!” To which I reply, if you know Scripture and what it means. That Christ can teach you by the Holy Spirit, then you have heard Him. You don’t necessarily need to hear an audible voice. Some have and it is a blessing. But make sure that voice is in agreement with what Scripture says.
20 But you have an anointing from the Holy One, and you know all things. 21 I have not written to you because you do not know the truth, but because you know it, and that no lie is of the truth. (I John 2:20-21)
So the Way is to follow Christ. His Truth. His example. Those who have built up and follow the traditions of their fathers in denominations and religion are failing miserably in Christ’s example. For if we know Christ, we know the Way is simple. It is not full of heavy religious practices and special days to keep. There was only one thing He told us to keep. The breaking of the bread and drinking of wine as an example and remembrance of His death on the cross to pay for our sins.
17 Then He took the cup, and gave thanks, and said, “Take this and divide it among yourselves; 18 for I say to you, I will not drink of the fruit of the vine until the kingdom of God comes.”
19 And He took bread, gave thanks and broke it, and gave it to them, saying, “This is My body which is given for you; do this in remembrance of Me.”
20 Likewise He also took the cup after supper, saying, “This cup is the new covenant in My blood, which is shed for you. (Luke 22:17-20)
Simple. Not a grand act of priests passing around wafers and wine was it? Just Jesus and His disciples sitting around a table enjoying each others company in fellowship. Just as we are to do.
Brothers and sisters, let us follow the Way as set forth by Christ and the apostles. For they and the prophets are our foundation of faith in Christ. Not the massive infrastructure of denominational religion where we are forced to follow men!
34 When He had called the people to Himself, with His disciples also, He said to them, “Whoever desires to come after Me, let him deny himself, and take up his cross, and follow Me. 35 For whoever desires to save his life will lose it, but whoever loses his life for My sake and the gospel’s will save it.(Mark 8:34-35)
Follow Me says the Lord
6 Jesus said to him, “I am the way, the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father except through Me. (John 14:6)
