Brethren,
There is a danger to following politics. There is a danger in identifying with the left or the right or the democrats & republicans.
It is simply this:
I beseech you therefore, brethren, by the mercies of God, that you present your bodies a living sacrifice, holy, acceptable to God, which is your reasonable service. 2 And do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind, that you may prove what is that good and acceptable and perfect will of God. (Rom 12:1-2)
If we are conforming ourselves to the left or the right then we are not conforming ourselves to Christ through the renewing of our minds. Furthermore, if we are bringing these philosophies of left & right into the assembly are we not creating division in the Body of Christ? For if you are a democrat and your brother a republican you will not see eye to eye as Christ has called us.
10 Now I plead with you, brethren, by the name of our Lord Jesus Christ, that you all speak the same thing, and that there be no divisions among you, but that you be perfectly joined together in the same mind and in the same judgment.
(ICor. 1:10)
Is this enough to convince you to repent? Yes, repent. For it is a sin to follow the ways of the world. Isn’t following and practicing politics the way of the world? Don’t beleive me?
Consider this. All the governments of the world follow whatever agenda they write into law. Not the law of the Lord, but whatever it is they decide is right. A perfect example is the Supreme Court’s ruling that confirms same sex marraiges. Those of us who know Scripture and believe it know this is a sin. But it has also become a political football. The same as many other “social justice” issues. Many of these issues become items to motivate people to the left or the right.
Are you beginning to see how this can divide the body of Christ? It is enough that God’s truth in Scripture divides people. Even families. Our Christ warned us this would happen.
32 “Therefore whoever confesses Me before men, him I will also confess before My Father who is in heaven. 33 But whoever denies Me before men, him I will also deny before My Father who is in heaven.
34 “Do not think that I came to bring peace on earth. I did not come to bring peace but a sword. 35 For I have come to ‘set a man against his father, a daughter against her mother, and a daughter-in-law against her mother-in-law’; 36 and ‘a man’s enemies will be those of his own household.’ 37 He who loves father or mother more than Me is not worthy of Me. And he who loves son or daughter more than Me is not worthy of Me. 38 And he who does not take his cross and follow after Me is not worthy of Me. 39 He who finds his life will lose it, and he who loses his life for My sake will find it. (Mat. 10:32-39)
If we who are Christ’s who already beleive Scripture is Truth, then why bring in other doctrines outside of the Gospel?
17 Now I urge you, brethren, note those who cause divisions and offenses, contrary to the doctrine which you learned, and avoid them. 18 For those who are such do not serve our Lord Jesus Christ, but their own belly, and by smooth words and flattering speech deceive the hearts of the simple. 19 For your obedience has become known to all. Therefore I am glad on your behalf; but I want you to be wise in what is good, and simple concerning evil. 20 And the God of peace will crush Satan under your feet shortly. (Rom. 16:17-20)
Remember, we are called out of this world to be strangers in a strange land. Sojourners to a Heavenly Kingdom of Christ.
9 For this reason we also, since the day we heard it, do not cease to pray for you, and to ask that you may be filled with the knowledge of His will in all wisdom and spiritual understanding; 10 that you may walk worthy of the Lord, fully pleasing Him, being fruitful in every good work and increasing in the knowledge of God; 11 strengthened with all might, according to His glorious power, for all patience and longsuffering with joy; 12 giving thanks to the Father who has qualified us to be partakers of the inheritance of the saints in the light. 13 He has delivered us from the power of darkness and conveyed us into the kingdom of the Son of His love, 14 in whom we have redemption through His blood, the forgiveness of sins.
(Col. 1:9-14)
